The taxonomy of this species is difficult to sort out as it was confused initially with other species. This was investigated for the Flora of North America and it is recommended that this be read for more details as well as the two additional references. This species is thought to be a hybrid between Sections Aleuritia and Armerina (possibly P. nutans and P. mistassinica or their ancestors) though the rounded petiolate leaves and narrow capsule indicate a close affinity for Section Armerina which is where it is usually placed. Flowers are white or lavender, homostylous and the bracts are gibbous but not auriculate. See related P. nutans and P. mistassinica.
