A widely distributed species characterized by the strongly 5-ribbed, long tubular calyx. This species varies in being efarinose, white farinose or yellow farinose. Leaves are obovate to oblanceolate or spathulate with an attenuate base to a winged petiole, rounded apex and entire or finely denticulate margin. the scape is 1-15cm with 4-16 bluish-lavender to pink annulate flowers, often with a white eye.
