Leaves oblong, oblong-elliptic to oblanceolate tapering to a broadly winged petiole, apex subrounded to acute, margin finely to deeply crenate-serrate. Scape to 90cm, white farinose at the apex and on the pedicels, with 1-2 whorls or nodding, exannulate, infundibuliform reddish-purple flowers. Calyx cut almost to the middle into lanceolate or triangular-lanceolate lobes, tinged with purple from lobe apex to base, thickly coated with white farina between lobes. White forms are known. Hybridizes with P. poissonii in the wild (P. dschungdienensis). In cultivation, has been hybridized with P. biserrata and P. wilsonii. The Sectional affinity of this species was in question until DNA analysis was conducted (see reference paper).
