Species in this section have an affinity to section Aleuritia and section Yunnanensis. Richards combined section Souliei into section Yunnanensis despite cytological evidence otherwise (for P. rupicola) and distinct seeds characters, however, genetic analysis is needed to sort out the relationships beween these species. In general, species in this section have scabrid leaves, with the blade serrate to pinnatifid. The flowers are pendent and the bracts are non-saccate.
