Deciduous with a small resting bud, leaves involute (often becoming revolute), efarinose, non-hairy, usually with a horny margin with more of less remote teeth, pitted glands on the surface, indistinct petiole. Scape glabrous and efarinose (sometimes a faint trace of farina), corolla bell shaped (except for P. dickieana), usually exannulate, but faintly present in P. amethystina and in some pin-eyed flowers of the other species. Capsule is as long as the calyx or slightly longer.
